Some numbers...
18 million users are in facebook. 43 million in orkut. When I typed 'Darfur' in the Orkut community search 2 results were returned, while over 500 results appeared in facebook.

small is beautiful!
since orkutters are all mostly of indian and brazilian origin (i think), are you suggesting that indians and brazilians tend to be less socially conscious? :-)
actually the explanation may be simpler. facebook is mainly young -- if i'm not wrong, its mostly college-going undergraduates and aspiring undergraduates (i.e. high-schoolers). political organizations on campus will also therefore tend to have a presence on facebook and they will also have sustantial membership (does it really take that much effort to join a community called, say, "save darfur" on facebook?). orkut tends to be mainly professionals looking to reconnect with old friends. orkut may not be the most appropriate place to establish a "save darfur" community.
@harsh I don't know too much about the demographics on facbook. but around half the people are between 18-25 in orkut.
True- as far as the 'effort' goes its prolly nothing to click a few 'join' buttons in both orkut and facebook.
But the numbers are striking. together less than 300 ppl on orkut are in the 'Darfur' communities.
@anon - yeah i like orkut too
i think orkut is exclusively used to connect with friends and social stuff....i havent seen too much of these things on orkut....a whole bunch of communities for particular places or say universities, hobbies and things like that.....
Good words.
